This beautiful watercolor by the noted
Seattle artist Nell Wheeler is of a beach
and lighthouse in the San Juan Islands.
Nell Wheeler was born in 1917 in
Alberta, Canada and became a successful
Northwest artist. She worked in oils and
watercolors, painting both downtown
Seattle scenes and scenes of nature.
Sadly, she passed away in 2007.
This watercolor has details that show
up regularly on her water colors: the
pastel mat (this one is a pale lavender),
her signature, NWheeler lower right and
her business card attached on the reverse.
Also on the reverse is a penciled notation
#5-47 San Juans and a notation in ink
Christmas ’91 Michele (presumably by
the original buyer).
The actual image is 7 ½ inches wide by
5 ½ inches high. The mat is 1 inch wide
with a single bevel. The overall framed
dimensions are 10 7/8 inches wide by
9 inches high. The ¾ inch wood frame
molding is reminiscent of driftwood in
This charming watercolor is in excellent
condition, as is the frame and the mat.
It is both decorative and a good investment.
