This checkerboard was hand made of solid ¾ inch thick knotty fir with a light stain and backed with green felt. It was then hand painted on each end with an arc of pretty flowers. The playing squares are incised and painted black or left unpainted for the white ones. There is an incised frame around them. The board is accompanied by an old box of wooden checkers, 15 of each color. The box is marked made in Germany and the price penciled on is 10 cents.
The board weighs 2 pounds and is 16 inches by 11 inches. The checker box is ¾ inch high and measures 5 inches by 2 inches. There are a few tiny spots of black paint loss on the board; one corner is lightly dented and there is a chip out of another. The felt that was applied does not meet in the middle. Overall, both items are in fine condition.
This is a useful, fun and decorative piece and adds folk art charm everywhere it’s placed.
