Description
This beautiful triangular bud vase was produced by the Giuseppe Mazzotti Ceramics Factory in Albisola, Italy, a town where ceramics have been made for four centuries. The company was founded in 1903, at a time when, according to Wikipedia, Albisola become the international capital of ceramics. The blue and white decorations, hand painted so wonderfully on this vase, were introduced in Albisola in the mid-seventeenth century. The style is termed “Antico Savona” (old Savona), characterized by the landscape of ancient Savona, Italy, a nearby city. The castles in the scenes are each different but harmonize due to the beautiful cobalt blue that is carried through to the sponged painting on the top and stripes along the bottom. Even the mark on the unglazed bottom is painted in cobalt. It shows the stylized drawing of an old wooden kiln with the initials GMA (Giuseppe Mazzotti Albisola), that is used on every piece. The company is famous for the extremely high quality of their ceramics and for their ceramics museum, Fabbrica Museo Giuseppe Mazzotti 1903, in Albisola. In 2014, the firm was invited to make pieces for the museum store at the Guggenheim to celebrate their exhibition “Italian Futurism, 1909–1944: Reconstructing the Universe.”

This charming vase stands 4 inches tall on a side and 5 inches tall to the rim of the 1 1/2 inch diameter mouth. Two of the sides are 4 1/2 inches wide and the third is 4 1/4 inches wide (Photographs #1, 2 and 3 show the three different sides). There are a few minute cobalt glaze skips and some wear to the unglazed bottom. This is a highly collectible bud vase in exceptional condition.
