This striking large, low bowl was made in the 1960’s by Karlsruher Majolika Manufaktur in Karlsruhe, West Germany. The company began in 1901 and is still in business. This piece was designed by Friedgard Glatzle; she worked there from 1951 to 1980, designing more than 1200 models. The bowl has a multilevel, dripped and sprayed glaze in a beautiful aquamarine and shades of brown, all matte and tactile with a lumpy, bumpy feel. The clay is terra cotta colored and is exposed on the unglazed foot and bottom, where the marks are embossed. The maker’s symbol, which consists of the crown of Baden, below that a double joined M standing for Majolika Manufaktur and below that the word Karlsruhe, is very clear, not always the case with this pottery (zoom photograph #4–it’s even clearer in person). The model number, 7274, is embossed further down; Karlsruhe did not use size numbers, as some WGP manufacturers did.

This bowl is very heavy, weighing just under 3 1/2 pounds. There are two thick strap handles and a molded rim and it sits on a round 4 1/2 inch diameter base. Including the handles, it is 12 inches wide and 3 3/4 inches high; excluding them, the bowl is about 9 1/2 inches in diameter and 3 1/4 inches high. The quality and condition are exceptional. It’s a pleasure for us to offer it to you.
