Native Americans made useful objects out of reeds and rushes for thousands of years. Floating decoys like this one, strongly resembling the canvasbacks that darkened the sky in huge flocks, lured waterfowl to the ponds and lakes to be bow-hunted or snared.

This decoy has a carved wooden head, a wooden breast and tail, with the central portion of the body composed of strips of a type of marsh plant. (Not being botanists, we’re not able to narrow that down—possibilities are bulrushes, tule reeds, and river cane, to name a few.) It’s in good condition, with chipping to the tail feathers the main indication of use and no breaks in the strips. Measuring almost 14 inches long from the tip of the bill to the tip of the tail, it stands 6 inches at the tallest point of the head and is about 4 inches wide at the belly.
