Description

This pretty lidded ginger jar with its original footed wood stand is Imari ware, a style of porcelain named for the port in Japan from which it was exported. The cobalt blue and rust are typical colors used on the pure white porcelain; on this piece, the designs are accented with a generous amount of gold. The central pattern is of flowers in Imari vases. This vase was made in the 1950’s; the paper label on the bottom, an oval navy blue “MADE IN JAPAN” with gold trim, is still intact.

The vase measures 6 inches tall to the top of the gilded knop; when on its round stand, it’s 7 inches tall. The black wood stand itself has a diameter of 5 1/2 inches. Both the vase and the stand are in like-new condition, ready to display with pride and a Japanese flair. More Details…

Description

So often china or pottery pieces need to be part of a grouping to have any impact, but this platter is so striking it stands on its own as a mid century modern design statement. It was made in Japan during the 1945-1952 Allied occupation. It was handcrafted and is so marked in brown script on the reverse, along with OCCUPIED JAPAN and BAMBOO, which is obviously the pattern name. In the center of those marks is the symbol for UCAGCO, a superimposed U over a C over a G. UCAGCO is an acronym for United China and Glass Company, which was a distributor of dinnerware and glassware from Japan with offices in New Orleans and New York.

Description

The name Enchanto is so evocative of pottery made in California in the 1950’s. Over 1000 of these potteries took advantage of the unique combinations of clay available in Southern California, including Enchanto which was based in Burbank in the 1950’s according to Wikipedia. We have seen paper or foil stuck-on labels which say Enchanto Fullerton, CA. 92643. Since ZIP codes started in 1963, this may indicate that the company moved to Fullerton later on in their history. We have also seen pieces of theirs which have both the impressed mark and a foil label for the Burbank location. For more pictures and information please click here...

Description

These exceptional antique wooden bowls were both made by the same craftsperson in the early 1900’s. They were turned, carved and then decorated by pyrography, (pyro=fire, graphy=drawing, writing). A wood-burning tool was used to burn designs into the wood and sometimes items were painted, as these two were, with their now faded tones of green and red.

Although the bowls appear about the same size in our photographs, the one on the left in photo #1 is larger. The interior is carved with three clusters of grapes and three grape leaves; the rim is encircles by a carved vine. Using the wood-burning technique, the maker created a rough bark-like surface over the entire interior (photo #2). The outside of the bowl was burned in tiny pinpoints over the entire surface, along with stylized, painted leaf and flower decorations (photo #3). This bowl has aged out of round; it measures 11 1/4 inches in diameter one way and 12 inches the other. It stands 5 inches tall and has a 4 3/4 inch round base that’s 3/4 inch tall. This bowl has a few age hairlines in it, none of which are obvious or threaten the sturdiness of the bowl.
